This is a remarkable, accessible book. This biography is a perfect introduction to early 20th century history for students of science, art, and culture.
With so much ignorance and ugliness skulking around as truth today it is refreshing and beautiful to read about a brave man who fought stupidity with education.
Schomburg lived during the height of the eugenics movement, when genetic superiority, and the institutional suppression of "lower" peoples was being touted by universities and governments around the world.
This was a man who was given no quarter when life was handing out mercy. A factory worker with a patchwork education, this gentle man became a self-made scholar and historian. His life's work was to prove, through meticulous research, that skill, bravery, and ingenuity can be found in all people. He brought to light the amazing men and women of history who shared African ancestry.
Examples of his findings are delightfully, even startlingly, revealing.
The culmination of this remarkable quest was the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture on 135th in Harlem, New York.
