This book disappoints, despite having all the elements of a good story: interesting characters, an exotic location, and even set during a tumultuous time period. The plot takes far too long to reveal itself, however (I spent the first third of the book wondering when something... anything... might happen). Likewise, the "surprise ending" is stretched out so long that you're not surprised when it happens, but just annoyed. And the characters, while interesting, are thrown into relationships with each other that are completely unlikely (at best). I think this book was a short story that had been carelessly stretched into a novel. Skip it; you'll be better off just reading a nonfiction account of Hong Kong during WWII.
