The Drowning Pool provides an excellent reading experience. It’s a well-written novel, quality fiction that goes beyond genre mystery fiction and actually moves into the literary realm. For example, there are in fact two separate drowning pools in the novel that become symbolic of something more meaningful.
The three detectives are well-drawn characters, realistic individuals, each with his/her own hopes, dreams and problems. Kim Reynolds, librarian and sleuth, who is the main character in The Inferno Collection returns in this novel. Sara Paretsky’s comment that she is a thought-provoking complex character is right on target. Mike Gardner, police detective, returns as well but is more thoroughly developed in this novel. He is a divorced father raising his two daughters while trying to effectively do his job as a homicide detective. Bert St. Croix, his African-American partner, is another key detective and character in the novel, dealing with her own personal demons. Even the murder suspects are fully rounded individuals.
By turns humorous, other times touching and dramatic, this is a unique novel worthy of every library collection.
